Required Reading

Not sure parents will go Gaga for this kid’s book but

I’m guessing Andrew Kolb didn’t intend for Telephone

to be bedtime reading.

I love the muted colors and charming illustration (even though the guy looks like a lion).

Nice to meet you (again) Mr. Dilla

I’d like to think of myself as an equal opportunity music lover. I don’t actively seek new music on my own but I do trust the impeccable music tastes of my friends. That’s how I fell upon Mr. J. Dilla (aka James Yancey).

The bf who knows I’m a sucker for great illustration showed me one of his videos and  gave me a lesson in James Yancey 101. The video was for Nothing Like This and starred two intriguing little underwater squid characters and a ghostly melody that hooked me almost instantly. One hip hop history lesson later and I realize I have been listening to him longer than I’ve known.

Tribe Called Quest, Pharcyde, Busta Rhymes, Roots, Erykah Badu, Janet Jackson…all great bands that provided voices to his brilliant soundtracks. A little more careful attention to the liner notes and I’d discover the talent hidden in between.

So here is to my unsung music hero, Mr. Dilla. The producer behind music that I bob my head to, memorable beats that I just cannot shake, and songs that I will always remember.
